SELECTION PRINCIPLES

The Club will give every full member who commits for the entire pennant season as many games as possible.

The total committed player pool will be divided into squads of at least 20 players for Saturdays and at least 16 players for Tuesdays.

The benefits of the squad system are:

o      For Selectors, they have sufficient reserves in most weeks so that they can pick the best available side without disrupting lower sides, and can ensure that no player is inadvertently left out of the selection process.

o      For players, they have a better understanding of where they fit in the selection process, there is less likelihood of ad hoc selections, and this results in improved team stability and harmony.

The squad system is set up to be flexible but not restrictive and allows for:

o      Fast tracking of new and improving players

o      Longer term loss of players

o      Temporary promotion of players where due to unavailability within a higher squad, there are insufficient reserves to otherwise field a full side.

o      Temporary promotion of player from a lower side in place of a player who is otherwise available for selection in that higher side.

o      Late changes by reinstating in the higher side, available squad members who had missed primary selection in the higher side and were automatically selected in the lower side.

▪       Where an available squad member in a higher side is replaced either temporarily or permanently by a player from a lower squad, the effected player will be personally advised and an explanation given.

▪       A Bowls Victoria rule regarding finals states that a player can only be selected if he/she has played a minimum of 4 games in that side.  Hence, nearer finals time Selectors may have to ensure appropriate players have a minimum of 4 games in a particular side.  A proviso is that regular successful team players in a lower squad will not be replaced.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Weekly selection will be based on:

o   Current bowling ability and form taking into account evaluation and practice/training programs together with observation and feedback.

o   Fitness, positional ability and team balance, stability and compatibility.

•   The best available teams will be selected from each squad.

•   Whilst participation in evaluation and practice programs is highly valued, they will only be used by Selectors to separate players who are otherwise considered to be equal.

•   In the lowest squad, if there are more available players than there are positions to be filled, a rotation system will be implemented so that all players in that situation are given an opportunity to play as many games as possible.
